What's The Difference Between . . .

  • Pro Series These are our top-of-the-line charts and include a great deal of harmonic and melodic development, and can be considered "feature" or "showcase" pieces. They often take surprising deviations from the "usual" chord progression, form, or even feel of the song. All parts and full score are included with each chart. Rhythm parts may be written out, partially written out, or in an abbreviated style (chord sheet with kicks for piano/guitar; "slash" notation for bass; kick sheet for drums).
  • Basic Combo Scored for any combination of C, Bb, Eb, and Bass Clef instruments, plus rhythm section. These charts are a bridge between a lead sheet and a full "feature" piece (like the "Pro Series" arrangements). It is like a written-out lead sheet, transposed for instruments in any key, with the addition of a written intro, solo space, and an ending. The entire form is written out so it can be played from top to bottom without any prior rehearsal or misunderstanding - unlike using a lead sheet. Bass parts are completely written out, and has chord symbols for the more advanced player to improvise his own part. The piano/guitar part is generallly a chord sheet, with significant lines and rhythms in either conventional notation or rhythmic notation. Drum parts consist of a kick sheet showing the most important rhythmic figures.
  • Basic Plus Combo Similar to the Basic Combo Series, but scored specifically for trumpet, alto, trombone and rhythm section. Horns are harmonized and have some countermelodies and fills written out. These charts give you the convenience and playability of Basic Combo Charts, with the fuller sound of the horns in harmony.
  • Super Stock Combo These charts start out as Basic PlusCombo (trumpet, alto, trombone and rhythm) but adds a substitute part for the alto sax and trombone. They also include a fully notated piano part in addition to the “slash notation” guitar part with chord symbols.
  • Big Band Arrangements. Full arrangements scored for saxes, trumpets, trombones (5-4-4) or (5-3-3) and rhythm section. Difficulty levels vary but most are medium or easy/medium level. Horn ranges are suitable for better high school bands, college bands, and pro bands. Extreme ranges are avoided (for example, trumpet parts rarely exceed D2, and usually include an optional lower part when they do). Each arrangement includes a full score and all parts.
  • Vocal Combo. Professional charts arranged for vocalist and combo (3, 4, or 5 horns and rhythm section). These charts are similar to the Pro Series Combo charts with more complex forms, harmonies and melodic development. Vocal ranges are moderate, and are generally suitable for male or female vocalists. All lyrics, parts and full score are included with each chart.
  • Jazz Christmas Charts. These are scored in the same manner as Basic Combo Charts and give you the same ease of use and flexibility; scored for any combination of C, Bb, Eb, and Bass Clef instruments, plus rhythm section. Each tune has been set in a jazz setting with jazz harmonies, and range from swing and latin beats to jazz waltzes and ballads, depending on the tune. All parts are included with each chart.
  • Christmas Plus Charts. The same jazz chords and settings as the Jazz Christmas Series (above), but written for trumpet, alto and trombone with the horns in harmony. (These are set up similar to the Basic Plus Combo Series.) All parts are included with each chart (trumpet, alto, trombone, piano, bass, drums)

Are These Charts Legal? Yes! Every arrangement by Joe Hasper has been arranged and distributed with the express written permission of the copyright holders. (In most cases, a royalty is paid to the copyright holder for every copy that is sold. If you have any questions concerning these charts and copyright issues, I encourage you to contact the copyright holder (usually the publisher of a song) and ask them to verify that permission has been granted.) Other arrangements and books are from established publishers who have made their own arrangements for copyright clearance and compensation.

Quality Guarantee. If you are not satisfied with any chart, I will make every attempt to fix the problem. Possible fixes include resending the files, editing a part, or sending printed charts via U.S. Mail as a last resort. If you are still not satisfied, I will issue you a credit for any other chart you choose (of the same ensemble/type).

Custom Arrangements. I can make custom arrangements for any ensemble -- combo, big band, concert band, etc. Just name the tune and tell me the instrumentation you want. Include anything else you need in the chart: key, featured soloist, length, difficulty level, instrument range limitations, etc. - it's up to you! Prices vary depending on the scope of the work, time of year, and how busy I am with other projects. Completion times are generally one week for combo charts, two weeks for big band. Write for details!

About The Arranger / Current Bio. Unless otherwise noted all the charts at Jazz Charts Online were composed or arranged by Joe Hasper. My publishing philosophy is that quality music should be available at a price musicians can afford. A quality chart shouldn't cost an arm and a leg, and you shouldn't have to sacrifice quality for price. The cornerstone of my business is customer service. I try to answer any and all questions within 24 hours, and if there is anything wrong with a piece of music or an order I will fix it. Period.

My composition study began in high school with Dr. David Berlin. In 1980 I was awarded a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts where I studied composition, electronic and stochastic music, conducting, and attended master classes by Theodore Antonious

I later studied composition at Carnegie-Mellon University with Dr. Marilyn Taft Thomas, Leonardo Balada, and jazz with Randy Purcell (Maynard Ferguson band, etc.). I attended master classes with Iannis Xenakis and Ward Swingle, and composed several theater and musical theater scores for the Scotch 'n Soda Club. In addition to performing with the Carnegie-Mellon University Chorus and Jazz Ensemble, I played keyboards in a series of bands performing everything from folk to fusion. In 1992 I completed a BFA degree in Music Composition.

After earning a BFA in composition from Carnegie-Mellon University, I studied jazz theory and arranging at the Mannes College of Music with Rich Shemeira and Phil Markowitz. I completed music courses at the Armed Forces School of Music in 1986 and 1990, and additional credits in music theory study from the Army Institute for Advanced Professional Development. In 2004 I completed a Masters Degree in Education from American Intercontinental University

From 1986 to 1996 I worked as piano player and arranger in US Army Bands based in Alabama, Washington State, New Jersey and Korea. In addition to performing hundreds of engagements with big band, jazz combo, wind ensemble, marching band and as piano soloist, I was in charge of 8 -10 piece show bands (rhythm section, 3-5 horns, and vocalists) which played popular and contemporary rock music. I wrote arrangements for every ensemble and had over 100 premieres in the US and overseas.

Since 1981 I have been active as a piano soloist, sideman and combo leader. Most notable engagements include long-running jazz trio gigs at the Seoul Hyatt; keyboardist and arranger for Harriet Legrant in 1988-90; and keyboardist and arranger for The Great Scott Band in Asbury Park, NJ (1991-1993).

In addition to my jazz compositions, over 100 of my band and wind ensemble works have been publicly performed by military, professional, amateur and school bands across the world. Highlights include the premiere of A Stephen Foster Medley at the opening of the Asiatic Bandmasters Conference in Seoul, Korea in 1988; performance of Concertino for Piano and Orchestra in 1990; a 45-minute patriotic program for the Monmouth New Jersey Indepencence Day Celebration and Concert in 1991; and the US premiere of Requiem For A Moment, a collaborative work for solo guitar and wind ensemble with guitarists Eric Peterson with Richard Laskee in 1993. In 1992 my composition The Happy Camper won the American Federation of Music Clubs Four Star Composer's Award. In 2006 my guitar solo, Portrait of Scotland, was selected to be part of the alumni dislay during Carnegie-Mellon's centennial celebration (100% Centennial).

Since 1998 I have owned and operated Jazz Charts Online, an online music publishing company located at www.jazz-charts.com. Joe Hasper is currently an Assistant Professor at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. Professional memberships include BMI and Amercian Composers Forum

I hope to see more charts for this kind of group in the future. It's really hard to get good music arranged for such a group but you have done a hell of a difference." TW (Chicago, IL)

"We used about 15 charts last night. They are great and fill a huge void in our approach. With different players some nights, the lead sheet approach was not the best approach for us.
